Hershey's announced they would be laying off about 3,000 people nationally and opening a Plant in Mexico. I live close to a plant and the rumor is it will be closing up and 600 people might lose their jobs. This is going to have long term effects on our local economy. Do you think that there should be any government controls on companies taking their business to other countries? If this is the economic pattern for our future what will the long term effect be on our country?

No, government controls aren't capitalist. Besides, in a global economy regulations always leave some sort of loopholes. LIKE, what we need to do is get rid of the sugar-beat lobby and sugar controls. When the ingredients to make candy is more in the US than outside the country, guess where production will go? Many candy manufacturers have recently made plans to leave. I am only surprised it didn't happen a long time ago.

Hershey's is over-rated. I've had it many times. It's good in small amounts, but if you try eating a large bar, then your mouth starts to hurt and you can feel the unnatural ingredients, whatever they are.

Maybe this is a good chance to Hershey's to reorganize and make better chocolate.

At least Mexico is closer to the source of the ingredients.

People have to change sometimes. Jobs don't last forever.

If the local economy was so dependant on one company, then the local economy has to take a look at itself and realize how dependant it was.

If I was working at that factory, I'd just start improving myself so that I'm not one of the ones get canned. Failing that I would look for work in a different field. I might even open up my own chocolate factory and have a big talent pool to choose from. I could make better chocolate than Hershey's and charge more for it, paying my employees better. Let the Mexicans have crappy chocolate as my community gets better chocolate.

Maybe I'd even retire early and enjoy life a bit more.

That factory cutting jobs might be exactly what we all needed.

This move will make Hershey bars cheaper & hence more available to all the Americans. It will also benefit the shareholders of the company (I imagine most are American)

Government should tax some of those profits and use the money for a program to re-train laid off people for new jobs and possibly help them re-locate to those jobs.

Our country will continue to outsource manufacturing and increase service sector of the economy.
That's what made America so great after all - ability to change & adapt.

Preserving the past is what they do in Europe.

OOOOH, don't get me started.....the day the plant in Mexico opens I will no longer support Hershey brand anything.....Of course this will have a huge impact on your local economy and we have yet to see the long term effects of this happening in the U.S. over and over and over again. I am so angry about this......I hope that anyone who supports Hershey at this time will consider this: If the water in Mexico is not safe to drink what impact will this have on the candy bar you eat? The mere fact that inspections will likely not be enforced should mean something to all of us. I dare to think what America will be in 50 years. I am beyond mad about this. Today I had some foreign tongue on my phone who I could not understand word one......please quit calling me. I speak English and I am tired of wasting my time with these babbling idiots who want to sell me something assembled in their native country. I want to buy American made products. So Hershey, KISS THIS!
