Ok, so, the doctors all count from the first day of your last period, right? But they say, in fact, I couldn't have gotten prego before 2/15? So, they are counting that i would be 7 weeks today and i am due Nov. 5, 07 (counting from my last period). Is that accurate? I mean, we saw the heartbeat from the baby last week, so i must have been at least 6 weeks when we saw that. I don't know, i'm just confused on how they count it all out and how it makes sense, because by my count, if i got pregnant on 2/15, then i am only a month and four days prego, not actually 7 weeks as they say in the doctor's office. Don't know, help me out... :)

First of all, the first time your baby's heart beat was detected is one of the best ways to estimate the day of conception. You can assume you were around six weeks at that time. If you get an ultrasound early in the pregnancy, due date can be estimated to within a day or two. Other than that, ask the doctor when he starts counting. Maybe he started with the estimated day of ovulation. I don't menstruate regularly, so with my first pregnancy the doctor gave just a vague estimate. Turns out I had the baby two days after my estimated due date. Remember, the pregnancy is considered normal if you deliver between two weeks early and one week late. So as long as you have a bit of an idea you should be fine. Other than that, eat healthy, relax, and enjoy your pregnancy. Good luck!

They normally go by the date of your last period because they can give you an accurate time frame. It is harder to go by the date that you actually conceived because that date is really hard to pinpoint. The 15th may be the day that you were the most fertile, but it could have happen any day that you were ovulating around that time. I had these same questions about a week ago. My last period was 1/28 and I will be 7 weeks tomorrow. My due date is 11/6...Sooo Good luck and baby dust, lol

My first day of my missed period is 1/28/2007
The doctor's (over the phone) have my "conception" date at 2/14/2007 - I don't have my first apt. for another week. (Military husband, had to get referred off post for apt - after it was determined I was pregnant by their blood test!)
And I am "due" on 2/5/07 (based on their "wheel")
The reason they have you at 7 weeks (which I counted 8, but the doctor's office reassured me today that I was actually starting my 7th week) is because they start counting from the first day of your missed period... therefore, the first 2 weeks are actually prior to conceiving! The "Wheel" I believe is based on conceiving 2 weeks after your period - so they figure how many weeks since "conception" and then add 2 additional weeks to determine how far along in your pregnancy you are! (GUESSING)
I know this is weird - and I am SO glad that you asked this question.... seeing as we are so close in dates!
Good Luck!

It is not entirely accurate. The Doc set our due date and it was from the last period and she told us the day of conception. I told doc not possible and when the day was. Doc argued with me and I told Doc I didn't remember her being in the room with us. She got the point. And 9 months later from out date our daughter was born.
So they are not accurate but close within a 2-3 week window as a rule.
Good Luck

They don't know their butts from a hole in the ground. They are wrong all the time. I always tried to tell my doctor I knew exactly when I concieved and he didn't believe me. Turns out all of my kids were over due according to him, but not to the date I told him I concieved. I don't think it matters much though. They can still tell if the baby is healthy and developing well. The baby will come when it's ready, despite the due date.
Good Luck and Congratulations!!

Usually they go by the date of your last period. If the ultrasound shows differently, they will change your due date to match what the ultrasound says. Talk to your doctor about it at your next apt. Until then, stick with the due date they gave you. If they think it needs to change, they will change it. Happened to me. I was 2 weeks BEHIND what I thought. That was disappointing, but I'm ok with it now. It's hard to understand, and unless you understand all the ins and outs of pregnancy, it's hard to explain. So talk to your doctor. They very possibly could change your due date. Good luck!!

At this point its all just an estimate as you get further a long they can make a better judgement of when the child was conceived and what your due date will be. Mine was changed once they did the ultra-sound and saw how far my son was developed. Dont worry too much about that now, it will all fall into place with time.

I think it is better to go with your dates because doctors will then say you are over due or early.
Doctors don't know exactly, just watch your final days according to your calculations.
Doctors like to say you are late and then perform an uneccessary c-section they make money at this so just be carefull.
I had 6-children.
