How come in the NBA, when Amaechi (a dude practically nobody has even heard of) came out of the closet, it was such a huge deal. But when Sheryl Swoopes-- quite possibly biggest star of the WNBA came out, everybody acted like it wasn't a surprise?

Because it's a non issue, nobody cares. Neither "story" was a story until the networks needed filler, I never even knew Swoopes "came out" until I read your question.

well, nba, supposed to be filled with guys with big egos and be very masculine and when amaechi came out it was just like what?!!!? wnba, people probably think they are girls who play sports like the big boys and are tom boys and probably not the most lady like, so when one of them "comes out" people will probably say i knew it!

Because it is assumed that female basketball players are lesbians. The same assumption isn't applied to male basketball players.

If there are gay players in the NBA, they may try to hide their orientation. But females athletes are upfront with their homosexuality.
