what are the advantages of buying a barebone system instead of a desktop?

It is definitely cheaper to build it yourself.

The advantage is that YOU decide what you want in the computer instead of say HP or Dell. It also costs a lot less and if you put it together yourself, then you'll be able to fix it yourself too...

With bare bones you customize it the way you want...more disk space, more performance, more memory...its all about how YOU want it.
