Thyroxine controls your bodies metabolic rate - the higher the level the faster your metabolism. Therefore extra tablets (hyperthroidism) causes you to lose weight. However dont be inclined to take extra as it can also cause harmful effects on your bones, heart etc if level too high for extended period.
Dont worry about your dose seeming high - just try to trust the blood levels. I have taken 250mcg for several years now.
There is a normal range of blood level that you are aiming to fall within - not just one correct dose you have to find!

Are you being treated for 'under active Thyroid'? If so, you will gain a bit of weight if the dose is too low, but you should be having regular blood tests to monitor this. If you are feeling lethargic, forgetful, cold and don't feel right, then go back to your GP and he will probably try a stronger dose. It is really trial and error until you find the right dose that suits you.
Once you are on the right dose, you will feel better and begin to be able to control your weight, as you will also have more energy to help you to excercise or walk more to help lose some weight.
I have been struggling with Thyroid induced weight gain over the last 12 years, but find that I now have a bit more energy with my Thyroxine set at correct level (for me) and now I seem to stay at a level weight, although a bit higher than I would like, and I feel a lot better in myself.
Good luck to you and it will work out eventually, I am sure.

Taking too little will cause you to gain weight. Taking too much will make you very nervous and jittery and may cause you to lose weight. It has to be fine tuned for each individual.

Weight doesn't usually swing that much. Simplistically if your thyroid is under active, because you are on too little levothyroxine you may gain weight. If you are over treated and slightly overactive, you might loose a little.

No, if you take too much thyroxine you will lose weight more quickly. It's the hormone that's produced by the thyroid gland, too much makes you lose weight, not enough you put on weight.
