Our dog is very friendly and loves kids. How long should I prevent contact with the newborn to avoid the baby getting sick?

Introduce them immediately. As long as your dog is vaccinated, the baby will not catch anything from your dog. The sooner you do it the better. Your dog will be suspicious, even resentful if you keep the baby off limits. Keep a close eye in the beginning in case your dog is jealous.

When both of our children came home from the hospital (and my oldest was a 5 lb preemie), we put our 85 lb. golden on the bed, and plopped the babies on top of him. He took his time sniffing them, then he licked them, and it was love at first sight. He developed a fierce bond with them instantly. With our first daughter, he stationed himself by her crib. Whenever she stirred he would come and nudge me and insist that I go check on her. He also would not let anyone he did not know near her.

On another note- There is evidence that babies that are exposed to household pets are significantly less likely to develope asthma and allergies.

Don't worry, and happy bonding!

You should be bringing home clothes the baby has worn in the hospital to the have the dog smell before you bring the baby home. Then once the baby is home allow the dog to smell the baby. The dog will not get the baby sick. But if you do not introduce them correctly you may end up with a jealous dog. Remember the dog may be good with other kids but those are not yours and around all day and night. Your child will take your attention away from the dog.

Babies don't get sick from being around dogs!

You should introduce the 2 as soon as you bring the baby home. Give the dog a baby blanket that smells like the baby & like you -- do this once the baby is born but before you bring the child home. Then introduce them immediately -- SUPERVISED visits only. Never leave a canine and a baby or young child alone together. They will be the best of friends if socialized properly.

a healthy dog will not make your baby sick; the only thing you might have to worry about as far as this goes is if your dog has worms they can harm the baby because (this is gross I know) but dogs pretty much rub their butt everywhere when they have worms and the microscopic worms can get on the furniture/ carpet/ bed. Your vet can easily check for this though. But your baby won't get sick from your dog, even if he licks her -although I wouldn't recommend letting it lick her face because god knows what those dogs have been chewing on.
You do need to be careful bringing a baby home because even normally calm dogs can react strangely to a new baby. Try to introduce your dog to younger children while on a leash before the baby comes home.
When you get home from the hospital (this is what we did anyway): my husband brought a blanket my son had been wrapped in home first and left it on the couch so they could get used to the smell. When we brought my son home I let my husband hold him and I went in first to say hi to my doggies who were flipping out because they hadn't seen me. when they calmed down, my husband came in with the baby and let them sniff him. They were skiddish around him at first but they don't even pay attention to him anymore. Just never leave a dog alone with a baby.

The baby should be fine. Just watch the dog...no matter how friendly the dog is you still can't let your guard down...things can happen in a second. My dog was introduced to our youngest when we brought him home from the hospital...it just took time for our dog to get used to another person in the house. But remember just never leave the baby unattended with any animal. Congrats & good luck.

Your baby will not get sick from contact with the dog unless you do not deworm it regularily. Remember to deworm him once a month and that your dog doesn't lick your baby or approach without being invited by you to do so. If your dog is friendly with children you should have no trouble.
