Well, if in the last century, the media had accurately portrayed the worst of our plans to the people, and the people had had their say, then America would not have done all the damage it did do all over the world.
There would be more stable and prosperous countries -- the ones we messed up wouldn't have been messed up; a lot of places where people are still trying to dig themselves out of the holes we put them in wouldn't be in those holes.
If we hadn't spent decades arming the world, the world would be less armed.
If we hadn't so consistently supported oppressors against the oppressed (which most Americans would have preferred, had they know what was going on), then, yes, there would be much less bloodshed, oppression, and hatred than there is now.
But the media didn't do their proper jobs, the American people (uninformed) didn't speak out, we did commit all the horrors we did, and we are now in the situation we are in.
It will be interesting what happens now that there's a world wide web and therefore more access to information and a variety of viewpoints than ever before.
If only we could get our educational system to actually educate the citizenry, then we'd see real improvements all up and down the line.

Since the beginning of time, long before America became a country, there have been wars, and most of them over religious differences..Iraq has had this going on for century's. And if we think we can go in and change it to a democracy to a population who bases the government on religion, then we have no business there any more.

America is NOT the world. If America was better at democracy we might have more peace within. However, this has little to no effect on other countries except for, perhaps, staying out of their business and minding our own.

The USA was never designed to be a democracy. It is intended to be a secular republic. Get the fundie fanatics out of power and return to the magnificent republic designed by the founders. Then let the rest of the world be whatever it wants to be. nobody invited us to start an empire.

puzzling to tell what it may be like now. Edward the 8th could have been put in as a puppet KIng. Britain could have been allowed to maintain this is Empire, different than for India and different eastern colonies which might have lengthy previous to Japan. probably Germany might have centred this is attempt on the Soviet Union, meaning Russian defeat and no chilly conflict.

Democracy, if anything encourages disagreements, and a little bit of chaos within - that's the nature of so many people, with so many different ideas trying to govern themselves...if you want total peace and quiet you go for a dictator that silences anyone who makes a little too much noise.

America is a democracy. Just because you disagree with the majority doesn't change that fact.
The best chance at peace in the world is for all countries to be democracies because democracies seldom, if ever, go to war against each other.

Nobody ever said America was a democracy. It is a democratic republic. There is a difference.

Sorry, Longhair, Democracy or not, war will play a major role in our lives until we finally annihilate ourselves with nuclear weapons. It is inevitable. Democracy cannot stop greed, corruption, religious differences, or land disputes.
