It proves we share a genetic history with other mammals and are inferior to women.
Actually, there are number of parts of both the male and female body that are non-functional in various ways. In the division of the sexes, functions are suppressed or altered during growth rather than being totally eliminated.

It's kind of a vestigial organ. During human developement in the womb, the fetus essentially starts out a female up until Week 8 in its developement. Then, developemental hormones begin to kick in. If the child has the Y chromosome (which has the SRY genes) testes will form, which produce testosterone, which spurs the developement into a male. Without the SRY gene, ovaries form within the 4-6th week of pregnancy and the child is female.

It is during the 6th week that structures such as the nipple forms...with testosterone present, the nipple just becomes sort of a decoration, with vestigial ducts, whereas in females, it's part of a full and functional breast.

During human development the rudiments of
the genitalia are capable of becoming either
male or female organs, likewise the breast
rudiments. Depending on which hormones are present and their concentrations these
predecessors of the genitalia will become either
male or female organs. In a person who is
genetically male (has a Y chromosome, rather
than two X's) the male sex hormones sometimes fail to be produced. The default
condition, in such a case, is female anatomy.
This person will to all appearances be a female,
but will be sterile.

As pointed out in other answers, the male
breast is not always functionless. There have
been cases of males producing milk. I don't
know how common this is, but a friend of mine
had encountered such a person. The breast
rudiments simply fail to develop very far in the
normal male, but they don't disappear.

Fetuses are superficially female by default till the sex organs start steering the process later in development.

As such, all of them have nipples while not really being male or female. Reabsorbing the nipples would require a mutation that might threaten breast development in females so, men retain their nipples from the earlier non sexed phase of development.

-Nipples are especially sensitive and are a source of sexual stimuli, even for many men.
-Nipples are the result of an efficient plan of embryonic development. Human embryos contain characteristics of both sexes at first, because they all have basically the same genetic information. It is design economy. For example, in all human embryos, at first both the mullerian duct system (female) and the wolffian duct system (male) develop, because both sexes have the genetic information for these structures. Incidentally, this refutes the urban myth that human embryos "start out female."

It is called a "vestigial structure" because it is of no use or function. It has no function for male humans only female humans. Vestigial structures are used by scientists to link closely related animals or plants. For example wings on flightless birds, appendix in humans, hind leg bones in whales, hair on humans. Vestigial structures help prove evolution by linking humans and other closely related animals.
