I'm creating a movie screenplay and I'm planning to pick up a thing or two from a few (moderately old) movies like 1990-1999 and as such. I am worried about violating copyright laws and later get sued for it.

the screen play (script) for movie or TV production will be copyrighted for the life of the author plus 70 years. It has a copyright separate from the produced item.

there is a certain lattitude for fair use, especially if it is a very short reference or is clearly intended as a parody adaptation of the original to either poke fun or make a political statement.

you should talk with the original writers, they might indeed be willing to clear your work in exchange for a precious film credit.
