Why are there peoples names embroidered on some old table line. I have a tablecloth with several 'family' names in each corner, and wondered why, also are these collectable?

Linen was a hope chest item, and girls would embroider on it planning for their future wedding, or women would embroider it as a gift. Or a wealthy family would have it done to show that they had material possessions and the means to afford labelling them. It's collectible but not rare, so it doesn't bring much money unless it was owned by a famous person.

Several hundred yrs ago(well since the beginning of time) women quilted & embroidered & sewed alot more than today. Sometimes an elderly fraile mother lived with them. There was so much work to be done inside & outside of the house, they were all busy doing chores & work just to survive.Alot of times the older woman who was in bad health anyway may have sewn & created household needs & clothing. They lots of times personalized their creations for family members. There was a true sense of family & belonging, maybe also a need to record time in some way, so the tradition was carried on for many years & just recently in the past 30 yrs became not so popular. They still offer monogrammed towels & sheets in some stores, usually catalog sales(Sears, Penneys....) I can remember when people had their names on their screen doors or created metal signs for their yards with their name on it as well as the street address. Similar to a Family Crest from 3-800 yrs ago. That also faded away.
Family Pride is what is was called then.

old linens are quite collectible. as with anything, popularity of pattern, quality of workmanship etc effect value.
many times young girls/women were taught how to spell and count by doing samplers, family names could show how the table linen was handed down in a particular family line. each new recipient adding her name to a different corner.

Wow, they are my type of linen! Be sure to take care of them. If possible, cover that with plastic cover so as to protect it from stains and dirts.
