My boyfriend and I live in Canada, Ontario. We will have been living together for 2 years this summer. Is that considered a common law relationship? If not how long do we have to be together until it is?

Some states/provinces don't recognize it at all. Contact your magistrate's office.

If you were in the US, I'd offer you the same recommendation. To acknowledge each other by wife/husband and to file income tax returns as wife/husband, you would probably be considered in a Common Law marriage.

It varies by state (well, at least in the lower 48 anyway) I think some of the states don't even recognize common law anymore. I'd be pretty sure that in Canada, its longer than 2 years. That's not really long at all. In PA, I THINK it used to be 7 years, but I'm not sure...best thing to do is to contact your local government office (I don't know if Canada has mayors or govenors, or what - sorry!

If all else fails, I would do a Google search in "Common law marrages - Ontario, Canada.

Good luck!

Typically 7 yrs, for it to be considered a common law marriage...but it may vary by state in the U.S. and I'm not sure about Canada at all.

Do some research...type 'common law marriage canada' (no quotes) into your search engine and see what you find.
