Dont worry, your computer need not be turned off when you are connecting your router.... Just plug in the modem connection to your wireless router and then on usually by default your wireless router should start working, but if you need any special settings then you will need to configure it. To configure the router you will need to connect to it directly first, and then set the settings like IP address etc...

You dont have a manual with it? thats strange.... if its a branded one it should atleast have a website and support section... find out if you can get hold of any information on the web....

let me know if you dont.... All the best..

if in doubt, always turn the pc off first....easy enough to press the button again.
recently got myself my first wireless set up, router/modem and pci card.
for the pci card i had to install drivers first, then shut down the pc and install the card.....this was a good time to sort the router out as well.
there should be a manual on the cd that came with the router, this will give you the web address you need to configure the router, once there, the default settings will USUALLY be ok to get the set up working.
but you really need to set up your security and change the default password and network name.
if it is a wired/wireless router then you need 2 ip addys (i made that mistake first, only added the one) any other pc's you wish to add will need to be allowed access, there will be a setting for this in the web addy, add the ip of the new pc and/or mac addy....this will allow them to find each other.

1. install the router (your pc need not be on for this)

2. install the adapter software/driver on your pc

3. plug in the adapter to your pc

you may have to connect to the router to setup the user name and password for you ISP. type in 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (will be one or other) into the address bar of your internet browser and put in the password on the sticker on the bottom of your router
