I read that in "What to Expect When You're Expecting". I tried it once, nothing happened but that was a while ago and I haven't tried it since (I don't think my baby could see yet). I don't think there would be any harmful effects because the baby is protected in there but he/she may see a light and may move around. The book wouldn't say it was safe if it wasn't.

Actually, if far enough along in pregnancy babies CAN tell the difference between a lit and dark room. The uterus lets some light in. Of course its not the same as just looking at it, and you wont hurt their eyes. Try it, maybe you will get a fun response from your baby.
Good luck!

Yes, I have heard that it does work.
HOWEVER, my OB told me not to ever do it. He said that it can cause harm to the baby's eyes and that the reason why the baby moves is to escape from the light source that is too bright.
He also said that his personal opinion is that it probably scares the baby.

Uh, I'm going to have to file that one in an X file LOL Do you realize that if you can cover the flashlight with your hand and not see the light there is NO WAY a baby who is in you belly covered by your stomach muscles and padding, intestines, a uterus, and an amniosac filled with amniotic fluid could see the light from the flashlight. It's true that if you put a light in the womb that they would/could respond, but not from a flashlight pointed at your belly. That's just not even realistic.
