We started our baby on rice cereal at 4 months with the Dr's ok, she didn't want to drink her formula as much so the RN suggested that we wait awhile and then try again. We have tried it again at almost 6 months and she is doing good, likes the cereal tolerates it well but her formula intake has decreased again. I put formula in her cereal but this is not enough, has anyone else had this expereince and any suggestions.

your daughter probably just likes the taste of the "big girl" food. think about it. she has been on formula and only formula for months now. you are now giving her the opportunity to try a more solid food and she loves it. when adults like something, they want it over and over again right? your daughter will still drink her formula, maybe not as much right now, but as long as she is still getting some, she will be alright. my daughter is 7 months old and was the same way. she now drinks 6 oz. at a time and will still eat her cereal also. dont worry about it. she will come out of this.

Honey when a child starts taking in solids their formula intake decreases. They should have told you this. My son was started on rice cereal per his Dr's request just before he turned 3 months. He at the time was drinking 3-4 ounces every 3 hours around the clock. As their tummy grows their intake will increase again. If she is still having wet diapers and your dr doesnt see any problems keep doing what your doing. My son is now 10 months {born 5 weeks early} eats solids 3 times a day and his formula intake is about 32 ounces right where his dr says it should be. He also takes in water and maybe 4 ounces of juice{thought not often} per day. Again all this his dr is aware of. I dont raise my child by any book or anybody telling me "what is best or the experts say" I do what is right by my child.

Completely normal. Once they intake more cereal, they get fuller faster and don't need as much milk during a feeding. My son is 5 months old. We give him the rice cereal first (a couple of tablespoons since he just started) and then milk second. He doesn't drink the full 5 oz if he's been fed the cereal first. We also only feed him the cereal twice a day so he can get more accustomed to it. This was on the recommendation of our son's pediatrician, and this has worked well for us. Don't worry--your baby isn't starving; she's eating what she can take in.

Yes. I would dilute the cereal with the formula. Cutting a hole in the nipple for good flow. Maybe even decreasing the cereal intervals. Make sure the baby is getting enough fluids also.

As your babies "solid" food intake increases it is normal for her to decrease in her formula intake. Continue what you are doing with the rice cereal made with the formula and maybe start adding other baby foods as well. I went through the same thing with my daughter. it's just your babies way of saying "Hey i want more solid food".

I would only give them the cereal once a day. They depend on formula for most of their nutrients.

Yes, it is normal. I would rotate the cereal and formula intake.

The cereal is more filling and that is why she isn't drinking as much formula.

Yes. This is normal. When you are feeding your baby rice it is a filler and it probably taste a lot better then the formula.

Because the baby is eatting food they dont drink as much as they did before its normal. Give water, and juice between feedings. If she stops drinking all together then thats a problem.
