hello, I live in sasktchewan, Canada and I'm in the process of looking for a colt. I've beenriding for 10+ years with international level coaches in hunters and reining, so I dont want answers like maby you should think about buying a broke horse or talking to your instructor about this first :)
so my question is, does anyone know exactly how you go about gettign in touch with thes PMU barns? I would love to rescue a little PMU babie. And if you have any other advice concerning this type of horse adoption please let me know. thnx

Try Googling PMU rescue and see what you get.
Most farms have rescues that come up and buy the foals in lots and they take all the farm has. Many are brought back into the US and sold here.
There are many organizations who work with the PMU foals and some of them are fantastic horses. I have seen more than a few that I would have loved to have owned. Plus it makes you feel good that you are saving a life of a horse.

If you are looking for a PMU horse, your best bet is to talk to your local humane society or a horse rescue. I live in the US, and I would ask the ASPCA, but if you have a large animal rescue organization in Canada, I would contact them. I have heard that they make excellent horses, especially since a lot of them are draft breed mixes.

I agree with racehorsegirl: contact your local horse rescue agency. Down here in Florida there is one agency that has a lot of PMU babies-the Horse Protection Agency of Florida. This is their website: www.hpaf.org. You might be able to find a similar agency in Canada.
These colts and fillies turn out to be wonderful horses, but there is one catch: being that they are sometimes rather odd draft crosses (Ex. Morgan & Percheron), they can be very hard to fit for saddles when they grow up. I worked at a tack store for 2 years, and one of our best customers owned 3 PMU horses that she had raised herself-they were now all 4 and 5 year olds and she was going through 3rd saddles because she could not find anything that fit correctly. The store owner did professional saddle fittings, and we were able to get her semi-custom saddles for around $1,000 each that turned out great for her, but she spent a LOT of money in the process to reach this final decision. (One of them was a Morgan-Percheron cross-I saw the back diagram for the horse...I have never seen a back so flat in my 17 years working with horses. Nothing we had in the store fit the stencils. He had no withers at all! He ended up with a saddle with a Halflinger tree that fit him fine.) Just keep that in mind when the baby you adopt grows up. :) They do make wonderful horses; we had several customers who owned rescued PMU colts and fillies and were very happy with them.

Good for you. I used to rescue them along with another woman. It is one of the worse things I know of just to produce a hormone which in itself is dangerous. Contact: Animali Farm online or animali@aol.com or 805-938-0174
