I just bought a small flower in a pot from wal-mart and it's an annaul flower. If I plant it in my yard does this mean it will only last for one year? Will it re-seed itself for next year or does this mean I would have to keep buying this flower or seeds if I want this flower to bloom every year?

Can someone please explain.. I am a beginner in this whole gardening thing and the annual, perennial whole thing is kind of confusing to me!

Annuals - have a lifespan of one year. They grow, bloom, and produce seeds during one growing season. Depending on the variety that you have, it will likely set enough seed to have new plants next year. I would suggest that you collect the seed pods in the Fall and save the seeds until spring. I usually put the seeds into envelopes with the name of the plant on the outside. You can start them indoors and then put them out after the last frost.

Biennials - have a lifespan of two years. Pansy's and Petunias are biennials, although in some colder climates they will winter kill and not grow back the second year.

Perennials - have a lifespan of three or more years. In cooler temperate zones, non-woody perennials have a top that will die off and they grow back the following spring from the root crown.

Trees and woody shrubs are also perennials, although in the botanical world, Perennials are generally classified as non-woody plants.

Annual flowers only last for one year (annual meaning one year). They are usually cheaper than perennials due to that fact, but they normally hold their flowers longer than perennials and normally have more blooms.

Some annuals will deposit seeds the next year and you will have a few grow in the same spot next year. Marigolds are a good example. If you know where to look, you can collect the seeds from the annual and use them to plant next year. Marigolds and zinnias are really easy to find the seeds.

simple answer: annual is a one time thing, it will die at the end of the season and you'll have to replace it next year.

perennial comes back year after year (you'll see they cost more)

self seeding? it depends on the plant

welcome to gardening! You'll really enjoy it!

Wow, I can tell you've had your questions answered the wrong way before! You know, the thing is, I don't know the difference between an annual and a perennial. I just know what I like. I like daisies the best. Next would be purple irises. Then it would be morning glories. Of course I just love looking at a field of wildflowers and admiring the beauty that God placed here for us to enjoy. <*)))><

An annual has to be replanted every year. Perrenials will re-grow.
