hello i recenly bought a 2001 ford mondeo 1.8 zetec with 48000 miles its using alot of oil , wondering how to resolve this , right hand side of engine also seems to develop small rattle when oil light appears about every 500 miles, worried it could develop into something major.

sounds like piston rattle due to lack of oil in engine, maybe the owner before did not check the oil,and the piston rings are now worn, you best get the engine checked over, best of luck.

if blue smoke is emitted after overrunning down a long hill then accelerating the rings are at fault. the noise when low on oil may be big ends or camshaft rattling due to lack of oil. hyd tappets will also rattling if u/s or low on oil this engine should have buckets & shims. at 48k it should not burn oil unless overheated & rings have become u/s. compression & leakage test. chk eng no against V5

if it is leaking it could be something as simple as an oil pin or as hard as something really bad
