I have a coworker who I will talk to and we have gone out to lunch. I told her I was interested in making new friends b/c all of mine live out of state. I suggested we get together outside of work. Her response was only lukewarm and now I'm not sure what to think. I feel like I have made the first step and made suggestions. I don't want to do all the work to develop it b/c then I won't know if she is really interested in being friends or just being nice. How will I know if she wants a real friendship.

Try the next step. Ask if she can hang out sometime. And if YOU are ready for a friend, be open and honest to her. If you can't seem to find the answer...ASK HER.

you did the wrong thing be asking her out. Friends don't ask other friends to go out! First you start by having lunch with her in the cafeteria at the office then you start sending her little funny things like jokes to her e-mail and stuff. Then you start asking her out to lunch. You ask her out!
