Charles Babbage (26 December 1791 – 18 October 1871) was an English mathematician, philosopher, mechanical engineer and (proto-) computer scientist who originated the idea of a programmable computer.

It depends on who you ask. We know of computers such as the hypatia machine that are thousands of years old.

Pascal created a primitive calculator that ran mechanically, and babbage expanded on the idea though never really made it work.

In the modern day, people used Babbages ideas to create modern computers. Mostly, electronic computers happened around the same time period - the WWII era.

Alan Turing helped develop a computer for WWII decoding operations. An early computer they used was entirely mechanically operated.
