Ridley Scott's 'Alien'.
This was the first truly terrifying science fiction. Previous sci fi horror movies were tripe like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" or movies that featured goofy robots firing killer death rays and kidnapping beautiful Earth women.
Alien was scary because of it's primary motif: rape. Rape is a terrifying experience, one that is difficult for a man to comprehend, though Alien illustrated it's horror perfectly, with the face hugger that forces itself onto you, and forces you to carry and birth a monster. It was one of, if not the first, movie to objectively portray such a gruesome experience.
It's use of atmosphere was also revolutionary. Prior to Alien, movie makers tried to make their monster as visibly scary as possible. This is why old horror movies are very goofy looking to us. For Alien, the horror was not what you were seeing, but what you were NOT seeing. It wasn't what was there in the light, but what might have been there in the dark. pitch black tunnels and absolutely zero background noise created that aura of sinister-ness that has become the template for modern horror movies. While the Alien did have a frightening appearance, what truly set it apart from its contemporaries was that you barely saw it, only brief flashes, which added tremendously to the atmosphere.
All modern horror movies walk a path that was paved by Alien.

Horror- The Exorcist
It still scares the daylight out of people. Even for it's day, the special effects were breakthrough, and the story is timeless. What other movie with a solid, believable storyline is scarier than this?
