What constitutes a pump?

In the taxonomy of shoes, what qualifies a shoe as being a "pump"? Does this only apply to heels? Are they only a certain height? Only of a specific style/design? Is it something to do with the arch or the angle of the heel?

How exactly are shoes classified? Is there some sort of Linnaear rhyme or reason to the madness?

a pump is a heel, that is taller than a kitten heel.

When you say pump, generally it's a thinner heel 2in and taller. So no clunky heel, platform, wedges etc.

A stilletto is a pump, only sleeker.

Reason for the madness: It's easier to walk into a store and say I'm looking for a size 6.5 red toe peep pump, as opposed to, i'm looking for a size 6.5 red shoe with a thin heel, no plat form with a little hole in the toe.
Also very convenient when describing your outfit to your friend over the phone.

FYI, a kitten heel is basically the "nubbin" of heels. Just a little teaser of a heel.
