The NIT is the National invitational tournament, the NCAA tourney is much bigger, it consists of the best schools in the nation to fight for the national championship, such as the conference tournament winners get in, along with "at-large" bids which are given to the top teams such as top 25 teams in the rankings, if u win the NCAA u r the champions, the NIT is just a tourney of teams that werent good enough to make the tournament and are in a seperate tourney. The NCAA tourney is to decide who is the Champion like in any other sport, the NIT is just a seperate tourney for second tier teams that didnt make the tournament, hope this helps

Until at least the 1960s, the NIT was held in as much esteem as the NCAA Tournament. While early NCAA championship games were held in small college gyms typically away from the media spotlight, the NIT finals were always at Madison Square Garden in New York, guaranteeing major publicity for the schools, coaches, and players. Also, until the 1970s, the NCAA only invited the champions of member conferences to its tournament, shutting out many high-ranked teams and independent teams not tied to a particular conference. In fact, some top teams would refuse an NCAA Tournament in favor of the NIT.
In the 1960s and 70s, though, John Wooden's UCLA teams caused public awareness of college basketball to skyrocket. After the Bruins won 10 national championships in 12 years, the NCAAs were cemented as the premier tournament in college basketball. The NCAA finally allowed at-large teams into the tournament in 1975, and their supremacy has since only been bolstered by the expansion of the tournament from 32 to 40, 48, 64, and now 65 teams.

The NCAA crowns the winner of college basketball for the year and the NIT is basically a consellation prize for not making the NCAA tournament. Also there are i think 37 teams that get in for winning their conference tournament and the rest are picked by a commitee and are called at large bids. Hope this helps

You have to earn the privilege to be picked to play in the NCAA tourney. The NIT (or nearly in there) is and invitational tournament.
