I have just given birth to my first baby, but I am in a lot of pain due to some "minor" tearing during the birth. The nurses have told me that it is just grazed and that it's quite common, however the area effected is at the front, which makes urination extremely difficult. The only information I can find is about perineum tears and tips for stitches and things, which isn't exactly my problem. Did anyone have simlar problems after giving labour, and does anyone have any tips on what I can do to make urination less painful?

They didn't actually give me anything at the hospital for the grazing, but they did tell me to keep it as dry as possible. One nurse did suggest that I try to pee in the shower, but it still kills! I'll definately give a few of these suggestions a go though - after all, I have to pee some how. Thanks a lot for all your help guys!

That sounds EXACTLY like what I had!
I have to tell you I was uncomfortable for a while but it did get better....I yelled more going for a wee than I did having the baby!
I did try pouring warm water between my legs as I urinated. I found warm worked best. I would wet a wad of loo roll before I went and then jump up immediately afterwards and slap that on the affected area for wiping! Buy the softest loo roll you can get, it's invaluable! I cleaned the grazes each day with cotton wool and water to stop too much urine from irritating the wounds. Other than that, don't stop drinking fluids because you're scared of weeing - I did that for a couple of days and all it does is make your urine more concentrated so it stings MORE! Keep hydrated, keep drinking! When you do have to go, breathe deeply and pee as hard and fast as you can!! I would hop around the bathroom for a good couple of minutes afterward and feel very sore for at least a half hour, but it would always pass.... Try not to 'go' just before bed as I found laying down with my legs together was the worst position to adopt straight after weeing. If you can, try keeping your pants off for a few minutes to let the area dry well. Try laying on a towel on the bed to catch you bleeding and let air get to the area, it helps with healing.
Otherwise, just try to take your mind off it and try not to make it into too big of a deal in your mind.... or you'll end up constipated!!
I do sympathise with you hun, it's very painful! I found the urinating pain faded big style after a couple of weeks. I still got nerve pain every so often after a few more weeks, but it all healed nicely and I've been back in full working order with no discomfort whatsoever for a couple of months now. (My daughter is 17 weeks) I'd say it took 8 weeks to feel 'normal' but the worst WILL soon be over! Noone warns you about this do they!!!
The pain used to make my legs buckle, so good luck and CONGRATULATIONS on your new baby!!
I hope this has helped you!!

I wouldn't worry so much about a UTI, it is the acid in the urine hitting the tear that is causing the pain. I have a few tips that worked for the pain after and the pain during.
1. put about 5 diaper wipes in the microwave for about 10 seconds, than hold on the pain
2. tucks pads work as well
3. wet a pad and out it in the freezer for an hour, put it along with your other pad for about 20 mins, the ice will feel nice.
4. Use a peri bottle of warm water while you pee, it will take the sting away, it also will help to clean you.
5. Warm sitz baths
6. This is going to sound gross, but if all else fails, pee while in the shower.

YEP! IT hurts like....Everything. The things you can do to help yourself as stupid as this sounds is to get a bottle of WARM water and squirt it on that area while you are peeing (it's a circus act I know) it'll help dilute the pee as it comes out and it won't burn as much. Also you can get a spray called Dermoplast and spray the area after you've peed and cleaned the area and it takes the pain away too. Witchhazel pads(Tucks) can help too. Just gently pat the area with the pad. Also, when you can sit in a tub with warm water only NO SOAP no bubbles just warm water and soak for 15 mins if you can. What your nurse is trying to say is that you've got what I call Baby Rugburn...instead of ripping you've just gotten the friction burn up there...treat it like you would a tear and it'll heal fine.

I didn't have tearing in the front but I had a level 4 episiotomy. The hospital gave me all sorts of things to take care of my stitches: A sitz bath, Dermoplast antibacterial spray (which had a numbing agent in it), and a bottle to spray myself with water after I urinated or had a bm. Did they give you any instruction? Did they give you anything to help you keep the area clean?

Did the hospital give you numbing spray? Mine did after I tore with my son. You can get it in the first aid section at local drug stores.
Good luck !

If you're having burning with urination, you might actually have a bladder infection (UTI). So you might want to go get tested for UTI at your doctor.
Other than that I can't help you, I've only had c-sections.
