This brings up several questions..
1) Is this the password to actually get on the laptop, or the XP password?
2) Do you have an account on the Laptop?
Basically what you can do if it is the XP password is check "hint" (that would be the question mark) hopefully if you knew your spouse well, you will know the password from the hint.
If not, and you have an account on the PC as an ADMIN, change to logon selection to get rid of the "Welcome Screen". then type in "Administrator" for the user, and click enter. This should activate the Administrators account, from there you should be able to make changes, and remove passwords.
Above all else, DO NOT PERFORM A FACTORY RESTORE!!!! You will loose everything if you do this.
One more thing to address, do not try to do a "REPAIR", this is just reloading only the operating system without removing the data. The original settings will adhere to the reinstalled OS, thus leaving you in the same situation.
I looked at other answers, especially the ones comcerning the "F8" key. I just tested this, and I have found out, as well as remember this..
If it was upgraded to XP, it asks for an ADMIN password during install, so basically, if this is the case "F8" will not work.
I do not know about the software they are offering, but I would be cautious, and even then, you need to have an account on the laptop in order to download and install it.
My condolences

sorry to hear about your husband, this is why i would recommend you re-install your operating system
i recommend this more for a emotinal reason,as i could explain to you how to gain access to his desktop, but you will start to see memories that may upset you and make you depressed
re-installing windows xp is a basic operation, just insert your windows xp disk or recovery disk(came with laptop) and restart the system, the disk will boot up and windows will begin to install, you may need the product key but this will be on the side or underneath the laptop
also by re-installing windows xp,the laptop will be alot quicker as all of the clutter would be wiped off and there will be a clean os and registry
alternatively, press delete at start and this will gain you access to the bios(basic input output system)and in there you can manually change the laptops password,or if you mean the user account password, then tap f8 at start up until you see a menu screen and then pick "safe mode",this will take you to the desktop minus any drivers ect,you can the delete any user accounts and passwords and just have a administrator account with no password
once again, sorry to hear of your loss, take care and all the best for the future
good luck

Usually passwords are added specifically so that other unwelcome parties fail to access the system - It's probably wise that you just install a new harddrive and off you go, if it is a bios password / on start up then this is not likely to work. You are grieving right now and I suggest you don't further raise your curiosity levels in case you see things that will cause permanent psychological damage.

while you're utilising domicile windows XP or in the previous, you could acquire and burn OphCrack LiveCD and boot from that. it is going to crack your domicile windows password for you. OphCrack LiveCD is a loose open-source acquire. while you're utilising domicile windows Vista, you could the two boot into risk-free mode and log in as Administrator and recuperate your password from the interior sight consumers and communities window (form lusrmgr.msc into the quest field in the initiating menu) or use a password reset disk (click Reset Password on the login demonstrate screen and carry on with guidelines). desire that enables.

Never try to go to his site now.As you were unable to know his password while he was living, you can't do it now. That means you two haven't had a good friendship in between.
Other thing is, if you manage to go there anyhow, there is a high chance for you to lose your faith on him.
Best option would be throwing it away and buying a new one.If you want to find some important details, try to find out in any other way. Shash

Other than trial and error at guessing the passwords...
I think you may need some specialst help (ie a computer engineer) who can have a look at his hard disk...
