i'm 18, im more than willing to get a job and work hard at it, im also willing to take it down a notch and go to a local college for a year or so till i can afford to transfer to the university of my choice....i would really like to move out, not in a nasty way, i would still like to be near my parents ( ie. same city etc) and we are on good terms, but i just dont want to live with them anymore. how do i go about getting out on my own, without any help from my parents, who are opposed to it? i mean, what are the steps, the things i need to do and make sure i do (besides the obvious ones like get a good job, which is my gameplan for this summer) and legally, what needs to be done, if anything? my parents are even starting to limit what college they will 'let' me go to, and i really want out...help!

First get a job, maintain it, and go to school. You want to be make sure you can handle both before you start out on your own and do damage to your credit. Save your money (you'll need first and last month's rent, as well as a deposit before you can get an apartment.) If you have space in your room or at your parent's place, buy stuff for your new place a little at a time so it doesn't hit you all at once. (You know furniture, tv, but don't forget the little things like towels and kitchen tools add up to a decent amount of dough.) Then, after all that start looking at your finances and see what type of place you can afford (don't forget that you'll need to pay utilities, groceries, etc.) Once you've gone that far, it's time to start looking for places you can afford and start applying. Good luck.

Legally, you have no restrictions. You are free and clear to leave. However, the first thing you need to do is save some money. Unless you and a friend decide to move into a place together, you're going to have to foot the bill all on your own. That can really get expensive with rent, food, clothing, electricity, water, garbage, car payment, furniture, dishes, paper towels, laundry detergent, etc. etc. I'd make a realistic chart of prices in your area for those items, and then see if you can even afford to move out on your own.

As for your parents, once they get over the fact that you are really leaving, they may even end up helping you.

Just start looking into apartments, house rentals, et cetera in the area you are hoping to live. You'll need to find a job too, but I'm sure you know how to do that. You don't have to worry about any legal stuff, you're 18 after all. The only issue I foresee you possibly having is that your landlord may want a guarantor to sign your lease with you. If your parents are opposed to you moving out, they probably won't be your guarantors. You'll have to find someone reliable and willing to sign on with you if this issue crops up.

You didn't say where you were from...
Here in the US...
Go Air Force. No sleeping in a tent or a foxhole for weeks on end, no combat, fresh meals (no MRE's), your college is cheap, full paid medical and dental, weekends are yours (depending on your job), you aren't moved around a lot.
