It is now clear that this website is nothing but a blog. Thus, allow me to blog this: If Y!A is supposed to be about real answers, wouldn't it make more sense to NOT let the asker pick the best answer? Let the best answer be chosen by the most thumbs up! For example:

Question: Is evolution real?

"Best" Answer: No, it's a myth.

Asker's comment: Thank you for siding with God.

No offense intended to anybody's personal feelings but this amounts to advocating ignorance. Y!A can eliminate much of these self-serving questions by not allowing the asker to choose the best answer.

I would like to know your opinion.

PLEASE NOTE: I will not choose a best answer based on what I agree with. I wil look at my computer clock when I'm about the pick a best answer and match the second (1-60) with the answering order. If the second is greater than the number of answers, then the LAST answerer gets the 10. Thanks for participating. And I do hope Y!A will take note.

Good point Maria, but there is something about "asking the audience" that tends to get the right answer. You ever watched Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

I've noticed the tendency in questions that are not so "fact" oriented, too. People who pick the answer that most agrees and supports their original thought. However, on fact-based questions -- like "Which way do you apply Teflon tape when wrapping pipes?" it seems that the questioner would be the best judge of which answer was most helpful.
Have you also noticed that answers can go back and select their own answer as "best answer" if the questioner doesn't bother? That's a little off-kilter, too, wouldn't you say?

Well , usually the asker is looking for something in specific and an answer might have complemented his knowledge better than other. Allowing him to pick the best answer is a way to let the responder know that the information he passed along was the most useful from the bunch.

The question that you are referring to is definitely NOT a serious question, is inflammatory and it should have been under polls, not questions.

I say don't worry about it and just ignore ignorant questions.

:-)

Oh, for God's sake. Even if the "real answer" was chosen on the thumbs up that doesn't make that answer correct. This is a public forum where you can get OPINIONS from other people, nothing more or less. If you're going to take Yahoo Answers as your reliable source for important information then you have bigger problems than can be solved here.

i think it's okay for asker to choose best answers cuz somehow we know the answer to our questions. we just ask it to reinforce...or check/see if what we think is right. and sometimes, we have already made up our minds but would like to hear other people's opinions. something new might just be oferred by respondents.

and voters sometimes just vote choosing from the top 3 to 5 answers. they would not want to spent much time on a single question for 1 to 2 pts. its not also a reliable basis.

Well no I enjoy being able to pick the best answer. Now if it was a scientific question or something that I wouldn't know then that might be different.

This is a place to ask questions, and get people's opinions and advice. Y/A has a disclaimer that is does not evaluate or guarantee the accuracy of any Yahoo! Answers content. If you don't this website, then don't use it, and stop complaining.

I think that you are totally right. Some people have two Yahoo IDs. They log in on both at the same time, ask questions with one, and answer their own questions with the other, then they pick thier own answer as the best!
And some folks just ask questions to see who is stupid enough to disagree with them, then they report the disagreers time after time after time. To me, it is simply not fair.

In some cases I agree but in the case of riddles the the asker would have to place the vote right? Hmm good question to ponder on.

That is almost the type of question that would be best left to popular vote for answers. I know from experience, that FAR more people vote over in R&S then do in P&S.
