My girlfriend missed her period last month and started having all the typical pregnancy symptoms, so we assumed she was pregnant. However, her period came this month (March), so we don't know what to think anymore. She hasn't had the chance to get to the doctor yet, but we assume it has something to do with her birth control. What's going on?

You should always take a pregnancy test before assuming you are pregnant or not. It's possible she just missed a period last month. It happens. It's also possible she WAS pregnant and is now miscarrying (about 30% of pregnancies are miscarried very early). And it's possible she is still pregnant and just having some bleeding. That happens too.

So what does this have to do with her birth control? Is she still taking her birth control when she thinks she's pregnant? That's not very smart, it's actually a waste, and some people believe it can lead to higher rate of miscarriage. It's also possible to have bleeding during the "inactive" pills even though you're pregnant just because of the drop in hormones. Have her take a pregnancy test. If it's positive, she should stop taking birth control. If it's negative, she's not pregnant and not miscarrying, because even if she were miscarrying she'd still have some leftover hormones. Never just ASSUME someone is pregnant without a home pregnancy test. There are many things that can cause a late period.

She could have naturally miscarried, I dont know her age, but I have five sisters and five daughters and well nothing is written in stone regarding womens periods. They tend to be the same but stress or many other factors can hold back a period. You did not state the type of birth control she is using so its hard to say what might be the problem. Women can also still be pregnant even with periods. LOL, now you know how hard it is to deal with a womans body. To avoid further worry, please get a doctor to do a pregnancy test asap. I wish you both the best. Michele

when I was pregnant with my oldest, my OB said that 50% of pregnancies end in miscarriage!! But normally it is so early into the pregnancy, the woman just thinks her period is a bit late.

It's possible that she did miscarry...but it's more likely that her birth control just caused her to skip a period. When I was on the pill, I actually stopped having periods all together!

I would suggest taking a home pregnancy test. You cannot assume you are pregnant simply because of a missed period. If you think you are pregnant, your body can have symptoms of pregnancy even though you really are not. If your girlfriend has her period, she is most likely not pregnant. Is her bleeding heavy and normal or is it much lighter?

She could still be pregnant many women have a period or two after becoming pregnant. Or she could have had a miscarriage(was the period hard and lots of cramps?). She should keep her appointment with the doc and find out for sure. If she miscarried she may need a D&C.

It's normal--she's not pregnant. When taking birth control it is normal to miss a period sometimes and also birth control can mimic the symptoms of pregnancy.

uh, when you are on birth control, you are supposed to have periods like every 3 or so months. if she just started, then it could be a little out of whack. as far as the pregnancy symptoms, if you think and honestly believe that you are pregnant, but are not pregnant, then you could have what some call a 'psychological pregnancy' where you have symptoms of a non existence pregnancy....people can also have sympathetic pregnancy's....

Did she take a pregnancy test??? You cannot assume pregnancy just from a missed period..if she was on birth control it may have something to do with that...She should make an appt with her Dr. just to make sure either way...Good Luck!

Most women have 11-13 cycles a year, but it varies due a number of factors. If you didn't test for pregnancy, there is no way to know for sure. Also, pregnancy symptoms are very similar to PMS. The only way to know for sure is to see the doctor.
