Can you provide an example?

What is happening is that the event triggers the memory. Memory works like behavior- it is associated with other things that were happening when an event originally happened, so when similar things happen later, the memory of the original event recurs.

Those feelings may then, in turn, trigger feelings similar to the feelings you had during the original event.

Sometimes when you have an experience that contains charactaristics of different events from your past that caused different kinds of feelings, the new compound event may trigger some strange new thoughts and feelings that are really just jumbled up responses to the new compound stimuli.
