American children watch an average of three to fours hours of television daily. Television can be a powerful influence in developing value systems and shaping behavior. Unfortunately, much of today's television programming is violent. Hundreds of studies of the effects of TV violence on children and teenagers have found that children may:

- become "immune" or numb to the horror of violence
- gradually accept violence as a way to solve problems
- imitate the violence they observe on television; and
- identify with certain characters, victims and/or victimizers

Extensive viewing of television violence by children causes greater aggressiveness. Sometimes, watching a single violent program can increase aggressiveness. Children who view shows in which violence is very realistic, frequently repeated or unpunished, are more likely to imitate what they see. Children with emotional, behavioral, learning or impulse control problems may be more easily influenced by TV violence. The impact of TV violence may be immediately evident in the child's behavior or may surface years later.

Young people can even be affected when the family atmosphere shows no tendency toward violence.

While TV violence is not the only cause of aggressive or violent behavior, it is clearly a significant factor.

So YES to your answer. ABSOLUTELY.

I agree with the first responder, a person who is weak minded cannot resist the urge to be violent. TV doesn't encourage violence, just provides another excuse for those individuals unwilling to take responsibility for their own actions. We need to grow up and realize that as humans, we are unable to achieve perfection. We need to quit beating ourselves up over the fact that we are not perfect, and unable to be. We need to accept this and quit trying to blame problems on other people, events in our lives, and technology. Placing blame does not fix problems, it only wastes valuable time that could have been spent looking for and implementing a solution.

T.V. seems to get the blame for everything at some time or other.Does it encourage obesity because of all the cooking programmes, how about casual sex as in Sex In The City, and those size zero girls on Fashion T.V.they must be responsable for eating disorders. You can say what you want about it but surely its the responsibility of the watcher to learn or not as the case may be .My opinion is that it doesnt encourage anything but may influence the watcher

Children, youth, and other weak-minded individuals behave more aggressively after watching violence on TV. Studies have been done to prove this. It can also desensitize us to violence in real life because of its common use on TV.

What I've always wondered is, if people aren't influenced by what they see on TV why do advertisers spend millions getting their products shown in the commercial breaks? Contradictory and hypocritical, isn't it?

It isn't the cause of violence, but it may bring out violent tendancies in volatile, or highly sensitive(or insensitive) people.

No weak minded people use this as an excuse to mask the real problem, the person is actually violent.

Yes definitely! The media in particular, you frequently hear of copycat assaults and murders once the TV news and other media have hold of a story.
