There are so many greats that come to mind in this genre. There are the classical masters like Tolkien, Roger Zelazny, and Mervyn Peake. Newer writers like George R.R. Martin, Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Elizabeth A. Lynn, Michael Stackpole, Sergei Lukyanenko, Tim Powers, Stephen Lawhead, Neil Gaiman, Raymond Feist, Barbara Hambly, Sara Douglass, Carol Berg, and even JK Rowling have all moved the genre forward and kept it fresh with new ideas. But if I could only pick one favorite, I think it would have to be George R.R. Martin. His Song of Ice and Fire series has put grit and realism back into fantasy. There are no good guys or bad guys, and he allows almost every character to narrate a chapter of his saga, exposing you to numerous perceptions and viewpoints. Every book he puts forward stays fresh and engaging, unlike Goodkind and Jordan who seem to have floundered lately. I must say, though, that I'm keeping a close eye on Sergei Lukyanenko of Russia. He has two books out right now, Nightwatch and its sequel, Daywatch. I think he has serious potential and he's quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

The late David Gemmel from your neck of the woods. Trudi Canavan from Down Under, Jane Lindskold from Albuquerque, New Mexico, John Ringo, Eric Flint, Raymond Feist from San Diego, California, Dennis McKiernan, so many I cannot list them here or I would be here all day. If you want a list go to Baen Books on the web and look at authors' names listed under the A to Z categories and see what they have written and whether or not you would like what they have written. Have fun, happy reading. By the way how did you get the gray hair for your avatar? I cannot seem to get Yahoo to make gray hair available for my avatar. Why I have no idea, but every time I ask they say soon?

Tolkien is definitely my favorite. I know he's the popular choice, but hands down, I love his work more than any other fantasy writer.
