You plan to conduct an experiment on the relationship between teenagers' hours of sleep & their school performance. Write an experiment outline that includes your hypothesis, independent & dependent varibles, & control group & comparison group. Explain how you would conduct your experiment, & the period of time neede for your research.

An hypothesis predicts an outcome, for example you may say that students that have more hours of sleep will perform better in school.

An independent variable is manipulated, measured, or selected by the researcher. In this case the independent variable is the hours of sleep that the students have.

The dependent variable is the outcome. In this case the outcome is the students school performance.

The control group will be the first set of people that you carry the experiment out on. You would set them a time for how much sleep they are allowed for example 10 hours a night.

The comparison group would be who you compare the control group with and You would set them a time for how much sleep they are allowed for example 4 hours a night.

To conduct the experiment you would set different times to the 2 groups (as stated above) and you would ideally do the research for a week, possibly two so that you can see the overall affect on performance at school.

Hope this helps

You do know what each of these terms mean right? I am not going to give you all the answers, but just a little help.

You make your hypothesis by GUESSING how you think sleep will effect student's grades.

Variables
- year in school...do they have senior-itis, are they new freshman just getting
- current grades
- do they have learning disabilities

Control group
- the one you don't affect with your perameters

the expirement, it depends on your hypothesis

There is an interesting site at

http://www.sleepfoundation.org/site/c.huIXKjM0IxF/b.2423075/k.D632/Research_and_Advocacy__Later_School_Start_Times.htm

which describes some of the studies that have been done, and if you look up those studies there would probably be useful lists of such variables as how to pick experimental participants, how to be sure they are conforming to the parameters of the study, how to define dependent and independent variables, and how to pick a control group.
