you know they try and make it sound like a good thing people are backstabbing you when they say 'you know you're popular when people you don't even know hate you' but it's just not true. there's a girl at my school who's a complete sl*t (by the way, she's admitted she is one, not a rumor) and nobody really likes her, but because of what she puts out there, she's subjecting herself to being part of rumors. sometimes it's people's plain disdain for you. I've never been the victim, or one who started it, but i've had friends who were and let me tell you, I would feel horrible if someone did that to me.

Someone started a really awful rumor and then blamed me for starting and spreading it. I hadn't even heard the rumor until someone called me after work and told me that I was blamed for starting it...It was stupid and I felt like I was back in high school, only this rumor was serious and could have ruined a marriage.

I've been the victim several times. I find it quite amusing actually. I've never started one, but I know a few who have.
