It is safe! The stations however are usually smelly and occasionally will have half asleep bums taking over seats but other than that, the busses are relatively safe. Being the only traveler, you should keep a purse or a bag with all of your important things and keep it close with you at all times. Try to sit closer to the front and is will be a much better ride (since most busses have the porta-potty in back). There are different lengths for the buses at night; I think there is one that is only 6 hours versus another for about 8 hours because they take different routes. Usually the ones past 10PM are the shorter ones and will only make 1-2 stops. You can check the schedules online before purchasing tickets. www.greyhound.com

RE:
Is it safe to travel by Greyhound Bus at night from Los Angeles to San Francisco?

It is safe as long as you are conscious of what/who is around you. I have taken the Greyhound from San Jose to Louisville KY and back to San Jose. I never had any problems other than I was a bit scared at some of the terminals as they were all in bad areas of town. I realized right away that I should not venture outside for fresh air. I did somehow end up on that crappy "local" bus from LA to San Jose. I was shocked at how many stops it makes. The bus would stop every couple of blocks at times. I remember looking out thinking "why are we stopping again" and then I saw the metal pole with a small little triangular shaped flag with the picture of a greyhound dog on it - no building, no bench. It took something like 13 hours!

When you arrive in San Francisco, you will be getting off the Transbay terminal. There will probably be a lot of people sleeping inside and/or outside the station. If they bother you, it will only be for money. It's fine if you don't give them any money, they won't be following you or anything. If you're taking the bus (MUNI) after you get off Greyhound, it will take a while. Buses usually take 30 minutes to 1 hour. Other than that, you should be safe.

P.S. - The Transbay terminal smells really bad.

First of all, San Francisco does not have a LAW preventing people from traveling to Arizona, yes they are boycotting Arizona for its new Law, but who cares! I'm a San Franciscan and I completely support the Arizona law, just because the city's government is again it, doesn't mean the businesses or residents are. Hey, there is also a hunger strike at UC Berkeley about this Arizona thing, I graduated from there, does not mean that I'm starving myself right now. Lol after all, if you want to boycott my city, go ahead! It would not affect me in any way. Maybe the prices will fall if there is less demand, they are ridiculously high here. On the other hand it will probably hurt those tourist oriented stores and shops, who employ illegals, they are really nice here but there is a lot of them

See a movie star; glass a mixture on a beach bar at sunset; slip on a pair of designer sneakers in an ultra-luxurious shop in Beverly Hills; enjoy at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, examine world-class museums, or dance the night time out in a starlet-filled club…..this are just someof what exactly you will see in Los Angeles, learn that city with hotelbye . Los Angeles is the California's liveliest city; may be the activity capital of America, with megastar wattage and nonstop activities. Hollywood may be the most-see attractions in Los Angeles. That place attracts countless guests annually who vacation there to pay homage for their favorite stars and maybe even find a glimpse of a couple of popular personalities. And sometimes they're lucky!

Yes, it is reasonably safe. Avoid the 9:40 pm departure if you can. It is a "local" that goes up US 101 and is a 12 hour trip. All the others go up Interstate 5. Sit in the front it will smell better than in the back. Guard your valuables closely. When you are sleeping your wallet has a way of working its self out of your pocket.

I would sugggest you take Amtrak instead
Greyhound has gone to the dogs and if you
take greyhound you would either find the bus so full
you have to stand for the entire trip or you might have to
wait 7 to 10 hours for the next run
and sometimes they say they will have a second section
but IT MAY NOT BE FROM GREYHOUND
Greyhound left me stranded AT MIDNIGHT IN PORTLAND
(OR)
so I advise you NOT to take greyhound..
