A friend of mine recently had problems installing a graphics card and subsequently changed some settings in the bios.

Now when he turns the pc on, it doesnt load at all, not even so he can access the bios, and he cannot change the settings back to what they were. It simply sits there with a blank screen.

Is this situation rectifiable? If so, what course of action should he take.

Yes, Easy
First Main way is Pull the CMOS Battery, and leave the PC off for about a Half hour.
If that does not reset the BIOS... Just do a Master reset of the BIOS back to Factory Defaults, then it should allow things to be fine and you can reload whatever BIOS you need

As easy as pulling out a battery.

While there will be a "jumper" setting to reset the bios, it is different for different motherboards/brands.

The easiest way would be to find that big flat, circular battery. Carefully pull it out, making sure you are grounded - so keep one hand held onto your computer case. Needless to say, make sure the computer is switched off with the power cable UNPLUGGED from the back of your computer.

Pull the battery out, leave it for a minute or two, and then place the battery back into the motherboard.

Should now be fully reset to default settings. You will now have to go back into the bios and set everything as you want, unless you have a brand new m/b which usually does most things automatically.

Hope this helps.

At boot up repeatedly press delete on the keyboard, this should make the bios page show. Using the arrow keys select default settings. Save settings and exit. Re-boot as normal. If this fails reinstall the original graphics repeat the above to get back to how it was. Double check that the new graphics card is working and is compatible with your setup.

yes i have done this myself loads of times... you are at the stage where you have to take the lid off and reset the bios by moving a jumper (or sometimes referred to as a berg link) all mobos (motherboads)have them the manual will show you but i always find it near the battery ... look for cmos reset then move the jumper over to the adjacent 2 pins turn on ( nothing will happen but dont worry) then put the jumper back should be back to factory settings and boot up now please let us know if it w orked good luck cheers

You can always take the CMOS Battery out, thus fully resetting the BIOS.

See what Motherboard it is, find the manual on the internet and it should tell you how to do a reset either by removing the battery, or flicking a jumper switch.

I've encountered the same problem before. I solved this by re-inserting the card again as it was not properly seated on its slot. Try to check also the memory card because it is possible that you might have moved one of them as you are plugging in your video card.

Re-boot your computer and try to change back your bios settings. Good Luck
