I joined several online critique groups. I critique them, but no one critiques mine. Why, you think?

Is it too long?
Have you contacted them and made it clear that you reciprocate critiques? Is it mandatory in the group that everyone critique everyone's work? What ARE the group's rules?

On Zoetrope.com, for example, the rules state you must critique several people's work before yours becomes eligible for review. People post notices in the forums or on their story synopsis that they'll reciprocate reviews.

If this group isn't working out for you, it may be that the rules are too loose or that your work is too long or intimidating in some way. Try to find another group.

There can be a few reasons for this.

1. Your manuscript needs a LOT of work and no one in the group wants to take the time. Use spell check, and grammar check and get as much as possible. Do a quick edit as well.

2. It's too long. Many critters want to crit something under 4000 words. If it's a novel break it down into chapters. If it's a really long short story... see if you can break it in half, then they can get credit for two crits.

3. It's a slow week, month... Is every other manuscript on the board getting crits? Sometimes things are just slow, holidays and school starting, and life in general...

Also you might want to check what kind of a group you are in. Some groups are better then others. Critters.org is a great one, but kind of impersonal. OWWW is more personal, but fewer people so you get fewer crits. Both are for sci-fi and fantasy.

There are pro's and con's to being in large or small crit groups. Check partisipation ratio's, what they do to encorage critting, and anything else...

Have you tried asking why nobody will critique your work? Will they critique others, or are you the only one providing feedback. You need to get yourself into a group that is interested in providing constructive feedback.

Maybe it's in a genre no one likes? I don't know. I'd have a hard time critiquing a story I have no interest in. Have you tried My Writer's Circle? www.mywriterscircle.com

Join my group:

It seems odd. I know that not everyone will get the same amount of attention in an online group. Put yourself out there and ask.
