Hello, all, this is my very first question and I really hope someone can help. I bought a 99 Taurus a couple of days ago. Sometimes the speedomer works and sometimes it doesn't, when it doesn't the miles do not roll over. The car drove perfectly during the test drive. Today, I drove it and the trans would not shift out of first. It will shift fine into drive and reverse. When the problem first started it was kind of jerky, in and out of gear, now it won't change at all from first. When I pushed the gas really hard and got the rpms up, it shifted hard into second. Do I need another trans or is there a simple fix?

Your vehicle speed sensor needs to be replaced. This sensor is mounted on the right side of the transaxle, close to the right side axle shaft. This sensor "inputs" vehicle speed information to the PCM (powertrain control module) for the purpose of "scheduling" upshifts, AND communicating through a network to the GEM (generic electronic module), for the purpose of operating the speedometer. Hope this helps.

The vehicle speed sensor answer is correct. Shop around for someone to replace this, though. Run like a bunny from the Ford dealership. The one in our '98 Winstar went out and the dealer wanted to put the computer on it and wouldn't even discuss just replacing it.....$168 just to put it on the computer, then if the sensor showed bad, the labor was $150.

The part was $28 and the labor at a local garage was $70. It has run perfectly ever since.

i'd guess bottom dollar you lost the torgue converter. Ford has a difficulty with many ot the Tarus and Windstar transmissions going out and shoppers are being charged for transmission rebuilds or replacements at the same time as the inner splines in the torque converter has stripped out. they're no higher than a huge pencil besides. Autozone has one made in Tennessee by ability of Daques?? for $174.00 that fixes the priority of the splines stripping out. also i'm also a ASE draw close Mechanic and performance fastened many Fords for human beings with this similar issue that replaced into going to be expenditures $3200 to fix and that i did it for $four hundred.
