The 80's were full of homophobes. Especially if you are in the music industry. It's the 90's and the new millium he is now able to come out and be himself. So he did.

Who Did Elton John Marry

The 80's were a very different time for gay people, both men and women didn't have a lot of the same freedoms we have today. Being gay was seen as an illness and classed as social deviancy for most of that period. people at the time had to try and convince people that they weren't gay.

This is why Elton married, many openly gay pop stars of the time had seen their music carrers come crashing down around them when the tabloid press outed them. It was very hard life to live back then

I dated plenty of guys. And I lived with one for 2 years. I didn't realize I was gay until I was 21. It takes time with some people. I look back and I should have known. But at the time I didn't. It's a tough thing to go through. Maybe he was in denial or just didn't know.

First, Elton John is a flamboyant entertainer. Not to be confused with "real" people -- gay or otherwise.

With that in mind, Elton most likely married Renate because he wanted a family (children) and adoption by gays wasn't as acceptable as it is now; or, he fell in love with her and wanted to try marriage as many gay people used to marry years ago to perpetuate the ideal of normalcy.

Of course, reflecting back on my original sentence, it may also have been a simple publicity stunt.

a LOT of us married a woman in the 80's. Sometimes you really try and do what you think is 'right' you attempt to hid your real self and repress feelings. It is an agonizing life and I have been so much happier since I was honest with myself and my family and friends!

With all due respect, you will never understand because you have never had to face the hatred and pressure of a society bent on making you something you're not. Most gay men who married in the past did so because they were terrified of being found out. It is only now, now when being gay is not an automatic prison or worse death sentence, are people finally free to be who they are. Ironic really that before, we were blamed for living a lie by marrying women and now that we are free to be who we are people want to go back in the closet.......talk about your screwed up society.

Because in the 80's it was less socially acceptable to be gay. So by marrying a "beard" He put all the hetro-sexuals at ease. He probably was afraid that if he came out at the time his record sales would drop.

In 1976, he came out to Rolling Stone magazine as bisexual. It would take him a few more years to finally come to terms with the fact that he was actually gay and not bisexual.

It's really quite common- the confusion and trying to find oneself sexually, and battle internal denial, just took place a little later in life for him.

Hope that helps.
