Ex Lax During Pregnancy

NOT RECOMMENDED READ BELOW:

Constipation is a common condition in pregnancy. Constipation occurs in pregnancy due to an increase in the hormone progesterone and an ever-growing uterus taking up space and cramping other organs. There are many ways to avoid or reduce constipation during pregnancy:

- Drink plenty of water. You should drink 8 to 10 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
- Make sure you keep up a high fiber intake.
- Eat prunes, or drink prune juice. Prunes are a natural laxative and can easily be added to your daily diet.
- Exercise. Walking, swimming and yoga are excellent at keeping your digestive track moving.
- Take a natural over-the-counter laxative. Bulk-forming laxatives (such as Metamucil and FiberCon) and stool softeners (such as Colace) are the only kinds recommended for pregnant women.
You should stay away from mineral oil as a laxative. Mineral oil can prevent important nutrients from being absorbed into your body. Castor oil should also be avoided, as it may cause premature uterine contractions. Stimulant laxatives such as ex-lax should typically be avoided. If you cannot reduce your constipation to a manageable level through the above means, you should speak with your physician to find another solution.

If you are severely constipated then the Dr's office is going to tell you to use Milk of Magnesia. Do not use Ex Lax or any other strong laxative, because they are too harsh on your system. Also after you have cleared yourself of the blockage, start taking Colace (stool softeners) daily to ward off any future constipation. Many things cause constipation. Pregnancy itself is a big cause of constipation. Throw in not being able to eat well due to morning sickness and/or constipation causing medication (zofran for nausea) and you've got yourself one nasty case of constipation. If your constipation get's too bad, or you find that you are unable to pass a stool please call your Dr. Impactions are nothing fun to play with even when you aren't pregnant, pregnancy makes it that much more difficult. Good luck and take care!

No, do not use any laxatives when you are that pregnant!!! The release from the laxatives could cause your wife to go into labor. In fact one of the ways to induce labor is to take castor oil or other laxative. Also the el-lax, because of the way it works, could cause some severe discomfort in her intestines, especially because of the size of the baby and the way her intestines have shifted becuase of the baby.

no that could cause unwanted uterine stimulation and it could make labor start but it will be awful to deal with the pain will not be that same as if she just went into labor if she is constipated then she can try a stool softener like co lace caplets that will help or she can try something with no stimulant or she can call the doctor and see if he will give her something

I always took licorice pills when I was pregnant. Licorice is a natural laxative. Also she could eat those cigars that are black licorice. It has to be the real black licorice.

My doctor told me 'absolutely not' for OTC laxatives. He said that if I needed one, I should come to him for a prescription or else, his nurse would do an enema in the office (eewwww...)
