The US is a big place and ppl usually have to drive to get anywhere.
Many things are not even in walking distance, plus you are in danger because drivers are not accustomed to looking out for pedestrians.
I don't think the car size has anything to do with the anti-pedestrian layout of many US cities.
As another answerer said, there are many urban areas that are pedestrian friendly.
It's the suburban areas that are not made for walking, sadly. There aren't always sidewalks, and even where there are sidewalks, you are risking your life by crossing the street (even a sidestreet). A walk signal doesn't necessarily mean you can safely cross.
Destinations that you might want to visit are miles apart.
Why are the cars big and ugly? Well, the size is probably do to ppl wanting visibility over congestion, and the "idea" of safety and comfort. The ugly--well, that's a matter of taste.
Why are the roads made for cars? People and cars shouldn't be mixing. The US is large so the speed limits are relatively high so ppl can get around in a decent amount of time. Sidewalks are for ppl. Unfortunately, crossing streets can be dangerous do to the thoughtlessness and impatience of drivers.
Personally, I like cars that are mid-sized and low to the ground (like sport wagons). No SUVs for me, but a car that is too small isn't good for many areas of the US due to the weather conditions we have to drive in during the winters.

This is why. Cars are huge because of the obsession of "bigger is better". This is why cars are made bigger. Some people want to get bigger cars because they feel like they are safe in huge cars. Believe it or not an SUV can tip over and fall. The vast majority of people in the USA drive cars and have done so for a long time. For this reason, neighborhoods are not being built for people who primarily rely on their own two feet. There are neighborhoods being built for walking now but for the most part it is built for cars because most people drive cars because most Americans don't like to live in close proximity to one another, so neighborhoods are being built to where a person can have lots of land and be far from their neighbors.

US Roads are HUGE and can accomodate such tanks. I hate big cars too. I hate to see SUV's and HUGE trucks driven by white collar workers...WTF a banker need with a big hauler?
SOME US cities aren't meant for walking BUT NYC, Chi town, San Fran...the REAL cities...you don't need no stinking car man.

bigger cars are safer and more stable especially when you are driving fast. it seats more people comfortably. streets are really made for cars. pavements and sidewalks are for people and pedestrians. aliens would really feel insecure in our planet earth.

yeah- share a road with some jerk driving a pickup truck (with nothing in it) who thinks he's cool s-it because his car's bigger than yours... especially when he's drunk.
I love steel frames. They keep people in smaller cars alive.
