Complex answer! We as consumers have grown accustomed to enjoy cheap goods and services, and conglomerates like Walmart are more than happy to supply us with them. In essence we are in a race to the bottom. Only a select sector of society is discriminating enough to demand the best products, but the masses are happy with marginal quality. That's where big businesses capitalize. By reducing the cost of production, they can compete among themselves and sell cheaper at the expense of local economies. Why? Because the only way to decrease the cost is by going overseas; specifically, China. Right now China has the fastest growing economy in the world and we are subsidizing its growth every day. By 2015, their economy is projected to surpass the USA economy, and as long as we keep importing more goods and services than we export (trade deficit), the value of the US dollar will continue to decrease, thus reducing our buying power. Time to learn Chinese?

Because they are only interested in the bottom line results, not the effect of their company on society.
And we are buying it because big business controls the Republicans in congress and the GOP has sold us a bill of goods through the use of spin such as you hear on O'Riley's "No Spin Zone" or through a president who is a mouthpiece for the right wing zealots like Stephen Hadley, his National Security Adviser, and Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney, and other neocons slipped into government from the American Enterprise Institure.

Because the business can make higher profit by manufacturing items in countries with lower labor costs, and because American consumers have gotten used to having a lot of low-cost goods available to them.
