I loved the Han Solo trilogy. It answers a lot of questions regarding Han Solo-how he hooked up with Chewbecca, how he got the Millanium Falcon etc.
I hope you all remember Edgar Rice Burroughs and his Mars series and Venus series.I don't know if it should be labelled sci-fi or fantasy. There are 11 novels in the Mars series beginning with 'A princess of mars'.Captain John Carter of the Confederate Army is whisked to Mars and discovers a dying world of dry ocean beds where giant four-armed barbarians rule, of crumbling cities home to an advanced but decaying civilization, a world of strange beasts and savage combat, a world where love, honor and loyalty become the stuff of adventure. The later books are about his son Carthoris, daughter Tara etc.John carter is a recurring character in all these books as martians live for 1000 years.
Pirates of Venus introduces Carson Napier (a somewhat more cautious hero than John Carter), who builds himself a rocketship and blasts off for Mars. (How did he get to Venus? You'll just have to read the book.) Beneath the cloud cover of Venus Carson discovers a world of sky-high trees, warring kingdoms and princesses in need of rescue.
I also read a lot of sci-fi romances.Catherine Spangler is a favorite author as well as Justine Davis.Lord of the storm,The Skypirate are great books by Justine Davis.

At last, a sci-fi question.... well I guess my favourite is the Dune series. Got all the books, dvds etc. Am reading House Atreides for the nth time. There's also the Lensman series by EE "Doc" Smith, thats a real old fashioned type book. Haven't read it for years. Finally The HAB Theory by Allen Eckert

Hands down, my favorite SF author is Philip K. Dick. He wrote numerous short and novel length SF throughout his life, mainly from the fifties to the eighties. His real landmark books were Ubik, A Scanner Darkly, Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep, and The Man in the High Castle. Dick was a philosopher at heart, questioning primarily the nature of humanity, reality, and religion. He also had a real biting wit and a great sense of humor. His books and stories have been adapted into the movies Blade Runner, Total Recall, Screamers, Paycheck, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly. More importantly, he brought to mind stirring questions in each novel he wrote. If you're an Asimov fan, you should definitely check out Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep.
Aside from Dick, I'm also a huge fan of Karin Lowachee. She's a newcomer to the SF scene, and she's breathing new life into the space opera genre. Her books (Warchild, Burndive, and Cagebird) are character-driven epics that don't take the easy way out. She deals with the tough issues of politics and war and the effect of both on society. Very gritty, very well-written, and entirely engrossing.
Other authors I like include Larry Niven, William Gibson, Neil Stephenson, Nick Sagan, Alfred Bester, Jack McDevitt, and Orson Scott Card.

Excellent Choice If you are reading the first Trilogy, get the second
Foundation and Fear. Gregory Benford.
Foundation and Chaos. Greg Bear.
Foundation's Triumph. David Brin
There is also the Dune Trilogy. Frank Herbert, and other spin off books in the same series.

I would recommend Timothy Zahn. I really like his books, though my favorites are Angelmass and The Icarus Hunt. I also like Douglas Adams who wrote the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. If you liked the movie you will like the book even more. I did read some of Kevin J Anderson's books, but they got to be too, I don't know, repeating. I do like the star wars books, but i haven't read any recent ones. i really liked the older ones where the twins are like sixish. I don't like the new ones because I don't like what they've done to the solo kids. Or the skywalker kid for that matter. All in all, the junior jedi knights and young jedi knights are my favorite, probably because i read them when i was like eight.
