Best of his era without question. For a long time he defined the sport. But best ever? The absolute best!? There's no doubt that he deserves mention in such a conversation, and you need only look at his accomplishments to see there would be a good argument to say he is the best.

For me personally, although I am a fan of Michael, I am not sure you can simply call him "the best." I don't know if you can name any one driver as such due to the complications of figuring out how to compare different drivers from different eras. Michael Schumacher has all of the skills and competiveness that would have made him a great driver in any era, but it was his unique combination coming at a time when F1 changed as it did that led him to rise well above many other fine drivers.

The likes of Prost, Senna, Stewart, Ascari, and Fangio will always come up in such a conversation. And Alonso looks like he may eventually demand inclusion into this group as well! And combined, there is no doubt that they are "the best." But which is best among them? That is probably going to be an ever changing choice, affected more by one's particular mood at a given moment than the attributes and accomplishments of the driver.

not "the best ever", but the best of his era. He did not really have any fierce competitors, other than mika hakkinen, and alonso. I think either Senna, or Jim Clark are the best ever. If Senna would not have died, I think we would have seen a little different results from schumi

He owns so many of the Formula 1 records, that he probably has to be considered the best to date. Fernando Alonso has to win another five driving championships just to tie Michael Schumacher. While anything is possible, I don't think it is likely. Personally, I think Schumachers records will stand for a long time to come.

Good luck to all the teams this season.

If Schumi had driven in another era he probably would've gotten himself killed early in his career and we'd still be regarding Senna as the best ever.
