having an interesting face is important. it doesnt have to be pretty, but it has to capture the attention of the designer or modeling agency, or advertising agency.
a plain face would diminish your chances of getting good jobs, but not by much.
other important elements include your walk (very very important in runway modeling), your attitude, your style, and your physique.
there are many women in runway modeling who arent conventional beauties, like

None of them are ugly by any means, but they all have interesting faces, and they are all very in-demand in the modeling world.
good luck!

It is more important to be photogenic. Some people who look quite beautiful in person do not photograph well. One of my friends dated a woman who worked as a model part time. If you met in her person she looked very plain -- not ugly but not very interesting or pretty. But in photographs she looked gorgeous. You also need to have good posture and be able to move well if you are going to be a runway model. Of course, there are many other opportunities besides the runway "supermodel" -- local stores and catalogs also use models in print ads where you would not need to be a slender or tall as runway models.
If you want to know if you could be a model you need to get an evaluation from a REPUTABLE modelling agency. A real agency will NOT ask you for money or require you to pay for studio photographs (if they do that, it is a scam so just walk away.) if they think you have potential to make money for them they will arrange to pay for your portfolio -- this doesn't hapopen very often so don't get your hopes up. If you have a friend who can take some shots of you -- both headshots and full length -- it would help because you could show them to agencies for them to evaluate.
Just a warning, modelling is hard, boring work and you will often be rejected no matter how attractive you are. Are you the kind of person who isn't bothered by rejection? Are you willing to get up early, do a lot of waiting around, be poked and prodded and treated like a coat hanger with no feelings? Are you willing to work long, strange hours and not have a guaranteed paycheck? Can you stand up to being constantly criticized and having to always be on a diet? Are you prepared for other people to demand what hairstyle you have and what makeup you wear?
Modelling is not very satisfying work unless you reach the very top of the heap. Unless you are at least 5'10" tall, strikingly photogenic and willing to put up with a lot of crap, there are much better careers for a young woman (or young man) to get into.

Have you seen the runway/fashion models out there today? they weigh about 26 pounds and their faces look absolutely horrible... coked out might be the correct term. They are supposed to make the clothes look good but they make them look like rags hanging off a toothpick.
Do yourself a favor and dont worry about becoming a model. It's not important.

I pretty much look at models as walking clothes hangars. You shouldn't even notice a model except to see how a piece of fashion moves and appears on a human frame. If you are pretty, well that's secondary.

apparently today, a pretty face is the last thing you need to be a model... modeling is not what it used to be... shame
