Would it be safe to get one at the pet store then. My four year old wants a rat. I told her we would get one when she got older.

Yes mice do carry diseases. There are a number of ways to contract them too. I don't live in Canada, but read the link below. It has a lot of info.

Hanta virus is carried by field mice and spread through their feces. Although Hanta virus only has a twenty to thirty year history in our medical files, the Navajo and Hopi tribes have known about it for hundreds of years and had a religious prohibition against mice and their feces.

Bubonic plague and the Black Death were carried by fleas on the Asian black rat. The bubonic virus has spread throughout the rodent population now and you are risking it if you adopt a field mouse, a squirrel, a wild rabbit, a chipmunk, a wild skunk, or any other wild animal.

I assume you've picked up a field mouse and want to have it for a pet. Not a smart idea. You can buy grey mice through some pet stores and these are disease free.

I'm not sure if the actually mice carry diseases, but they say that back in the time of the Black Death during the Dark Ages that the plague was carried by the fleas that were on rats.

Well the flies on mice can carry diseases, just like they did upon the outbreak of the black death, but the mice themselves do not!
