My understanding is that the job market in either field isn't really strong. You'll need to come out of your PhD program - from a respected school - with something unique about you. The best way to get that "unique" factor going is to major in the field you personally prefer, that you really love. That way, you can really devote yourself to it.

That said, the academic job market, especially in the fields you mention, is difficult. You are quite right to be concerned.

One of the ways that many people begin researching is by going to the websites of the schools in the field - both those with the best rep, and those a step down. Check out the faculty listings of the people who are currently employed in these programs, and see what fields they obtained their PhDs in. Also, if there are any journals for these fields, see if you can access them via your libarary. Check them for trends, and also to see where the writers are obtaining their PhDs. If these areas have professional level "clubs" - like the Modern Language Association, for English - check their websites, their publications, and their job listings to see what is in demand. My last bit of advice is to have you go back to your undergraduate school. Make an appointment with a professor in the field - perhaps one you know from your days there. Speak to her, frankly, about the job prospects, what programs are the best, and etc.

There really isn't much of a difference between the two. Sure, PhDs in Comparative Literature are considered dilettantes -- but so are PhDs in English Literature.

Apply to both programs. Go to the best university you can get into.

The job market is the same for both subjects -- bleak.

Have your cake and eat it; do your Ph.D. in English and write your dissertation on a comparative literature topic.
