I wouldn't ask anything... if she wants to tell you she will. Maybe her mom left the family and never came back. If she wanted you to know, she would have told you. And maybe she will... but let her do it in her own time.

Maybe her mom is just busy with work and home stuff. Allot of grandparents help out when there is a situation like this. But if you have to know. Then just ask her if She thinks her mom would let her come to your house for the weekend? Or something like this so as not to ask her strait out about her mom. Hope this helps.

I think that with the age you both are, if she wanted you to know, the subject would have came up already. Me personally I wouldnt just come out of the blue and ask her, but if the subject ever came up, then you can. Dont put her in a weird position by just asking out of the blue.

I see that Growls answer is very good . but there is a simple way to know , just try to know indirectly , start talking with her about your mom and try to make some comparison between her any of your friends mom . like that she was doing this and the other mom was doing that , and notice her face , if she looked annoyed and avoid to tell you about her mother in the same situation , then try not to talk in such things again , or she will tell you about her mother and you will know then .

well if she is your best friend it shouldn't really be that personal and just ask her because the longer you hide it the harder it will be just say
how comes your grandparents are looking after you and not your mum.

and then she should say something and then give her a shoulder to lean on but bring it up through another conversation!

I would not ask her that personal question. Maybe you should ask her grandparents that way you will know and you will not hurt your friends feeling.

I think it would be best if you asked to come over her house or maybe say if you don't mind me asking how come i haven't seen your mom around at all.

well just ask her very polietly...like
"im not trying to be rude or make you upset, but I always see your grandparents with you, and if you dont mind me asking....where is your mom? you dont have to talk about it if you dont want to- I just wanted to know"

If she tells you then cool, if not, ok.
Hopefully she'll recognize that your just curious about her and her well being, and that your not trying to be rude.
