I worked as a secretary/receptionist for 2 years and worked in an office environment for 3 years now. Why now are they saying I should work a job that teenagers work? I just moved to NC too.
I am gonna be 22 tomorrow.

Maybe you are really good at those types of jobs. The world needs people to organize and file or we would be a mess. If you don't want to get a different job that you are interested in.

If you just moved, its likely that they do not realize you have an extensive job history already. You have to remember that most 22 year olds are fresh out of college and with little to no experience. Once people get to know you better, they may change their minds. You also have to realize that you are in NC. Although there are big cities there, it is more unlikely for them to even fathom a 22 year old with more that part time work experience as compared to being in say NYC. You are the one looking for a job now. Send out your resume to companies that are looking to hire and make sure you let them know to look at your job history, don't mention your age. Once you get that job, tell the people who were suggesting the grocery store or mall that and when they show surprise at how you got the position, tell them again, well, I have been working for ______ number of years already you know.

Don't know. If you have the experience, apply for office jobs. The only things I can think of that would explain why people would be advising you in another direction are (a) there aren't any jobs like that available, or (b) you just moved to the area and may be at a disadvantage to someone who is from the area -- you know, the whole "Yer not frum araound heer, are yew?" thing.

Might be they are discriminating against you for your age. Might also be the job market for office professionals is not so good in that area. I think 3 years experience is enough to get you a job somewhere, just keep looking to find what you want. Do not settle for retail if you don't want to.

Maybe office jobs are hard to come by. Maybe you need a college education to succeed in NC. Maybe people are suggesting you get a clerk job while you look for other work.

Who know why people say silly things? Look for a job in which you have experience and background, like your office job. Grocery stores pay minimum wage and why is that good advice?

Because you forgot to get schooling ?
Secretary is about the same as grocery and mall.
Or did you pick up a degree in engineering ?

dont listen to them, follow your experience and get a job similar to what you have been doing! If you need to take a teenager job to start out with, fine, it pays the bills, but always keep looking for that perfect job!

Could be your attitude or perceived level of maturity.

If people think you whine about dress codes they're going to suggest you work somewhere without one.
