Yahoo has some kind of standard that 13 and up is OK, but they don't have any way of enforcing it. Lot's of people answering even adult questions (or asking adult questions) claim to be 11, and I'm sure many are only 9 or so. It's a running battle to persuade them to at least not use their own names as a screen name and to disable their IM.

I don't really have a problem as long as people giving answers understand the ages involved and try to give serious answers. I think if kids are old enough to ask, they're old enough to be taken seriously and be given the truth, or at least honest experiences. I am surprised that so many kids get on here without their parents knowing.

Just because a person, "can" doesn't mean they "should."

I don't believe a child of 11 years should be on this website. There are far too many perverted old men, asking filthy questions. And even if you determine to not see that stuff, it accidentally pops up now and again.

SOLUTION:
He's your brother, not your son so your approach may need to be a little different. Perhaps you should set an example for him and get off the computer yourself and go play a game with him, read him a book or go outside and play catch?

You will do more by your example than with your words and or arguing with him.

PLEASE READ THIS!!!
i am 16 and use yahoo answers and it has really helped me with things i can't go directly to people with. Just because he is 11 does not mean he doesn't have conflicts in his life like we all do here on answers...and besides, YOU should trust him. its not like answers is only about love and sex. KIDS come on yahoo anwers asking questions about sports, and games, tv shows, movies, and other things of interest of 11 year olds.
So please, give him a chance to explore answers too. I have a brother that is 12 and i dont have a problem with him using answers because i trust him, my parents are also ok with this. Maybe the difference is that we are in america and so the family relationships are different...all i am saying is give him a chance.

"For this reason, parents of children under the age of 13 who wish to allow their children access to the Service must create a Yahoo! Family Account. When you create a Yahoo! Family Account and add your child to the account, you certify that you are at least 18 years old and that you are the legal guardian of the child/children listed on the Yahoo! Family Account. By adding a child to your Yahoo! Family Account, you also give your child permission to access many areas of the Service, including, email, message boards and instant messaging (among others). Please remember that the Service is designed to appeal to a broad audience. Accordingly, as the legal guardian, it is your responsibility to determine whether any of the Service areas and/or Content (as defined in Section 6 below) are appropriate for your child."

I say. It is disgusting, the lanquage, and the questions should not be viewed by anyone under 18. Even I find it repulsive many many many times.. and I am a mature woman, of several children.

I believe 11 should be old enough under strict supervision and with the understanding that they will be nice and behave online. Also that if something makes them uncomfortable they will tell you. Otherwise why not.

11 may be a little young for some of the topics discussed on here but i'm 16 and i use it. i'd say at least 13, like it is for many websites/message boards.

I certainly don't allow my underage grandchildren in this section when they visit with me. What their parents do is up to them. I refuse to let them use yahoo! answers.

This is a site for those 18 and older. What your brother says is true, but kids don't below in here.
