I've been there many times. Have family and friends there.
It's a Southern city. The people are, in general, nice. However, religion pervades. If you're not religious, or you're the "wrong" religion (i.e., not Christian of some sort), you'll find things someone oppressive. If you're a practicing Christian, you'll find it very welcoming.
In's now going through a Renaissance. Mega-banks and other business have brought wealth. This means that there is a lot of rebuilding, new forms of "culture," and more high-end restaurants and such.
This means that there's also a ton of new homes and the like. Just 10-15 years ago, it was actually a pretty quiet place with plenty of land. Today, traffic is getting worse and more crowded.
Nothing like the Northeast, mind you. But it's a changing place.
The nice part of this is that it still has some character, while having much to appeal to transplants from the northeast.
Personally, I like to visit, since it's quieter than where I live. People who've moved there, recently, also appreciate the cheaper prices and the somewhat slower pace. And, being transplants, they appreciate the high-end shopping, the symphony, and the high-tech.
