Most accurate way, measure the soil temperure at 8 AM, at 8" deep if it's over 50F you can transplant

Another couple ways, if you can walk in your garden barefoot,
comfortably then it's ok

One you won't forget:

If you can sit in your garden with a bare bottom, comfortably, it's time to plant the tomates

Normally you put them out after the last threat of frost, which is normally around the first to mid portion of April. You can put out tomato plants clear into the beginning of summer, but you won't get as many tomato's by the end of the growing season.

You can buck the trend though by planting earlier. You can sometimes plant your tomato plants as early as march. But you'll need to put something like a Wall-O-Water around them. It's basically a cone-shaped plastic piece made of plastic sheeting formed into tubes with water used to fill up the tubes. It acts like a green house for the plants and the water absorbs heat during the day helping to keep the plant warm at night. You may still need to place burlap over the Wall-O-Water at night on the colder nights, then remove the burlap in the morning so the Wall-O-Water can collect heat from the sun. Burpee and most other major nurseries sell products like this.

The general rule is after the normal date of the last frost,if you set them out eariler than this you will have to cover them frequently to avoid the frost killing the plants.
